They act as antennae in insects . They are sensory organs and serve to transmit impulses such as of pain , heat and so on. They should not be removed as they fall off on their own and regrow too.

Like a snake's tongue or an insect's antennae that is the way a cat's whiskers are to it. It also enables them to know if a space will contain them.

Theres a few reasons why cats have whiskers. Cats need them for balance and determining the body’s position. They have sensory cells in the end of the whiskers. So, basically they use them to feel and sense whats around them.

Cats have whiskers for a variety of reasons. Primarily, they are used for sensing and navigating their environment. Whiskers are sensitive to subtle changes in air currents, allowing cats to detect the presence of nearby objects, even in the dark. They also provide cats with information about the size of an object, helping them judge whether they can fit through a space.

Whiskers are specifically tuned sensory equipment that guide a cat through daily functions. These specialized hairs aid vision and help a cat navigate his environment, providing additional sensory input, much like antennae on insects.
