This myth of cats having nine lives started in egypt as their gods were in feline symbols. Also a cat survived so much extreme weather in fall and winter hence gained that popularity

It's a myth, but cats are very strong pets and could survive a severe blow, locking your self and a cat in a room to kill it may be impossible, they have sharp reflexes and you would end up with a fatal injury
