My cat now sleeps a lot. Is this because it is old or just tiredness.

They sleep for long periods to preserve the energy they need to hunt, cause and kill their next meal. They have evolved to do so.

Well maybe that is for the wild ones. I am talking about the domesticated ones like mine that sleep most of the time after all they don't hunt for food.

Domestic cats will still share traits from feral ones and their ancestors. They evolved from a long line of hunters and predators. Cats are also crepuscular which means they’re more active at dawn and dusk because prey is active at those times.

Cats sleep most of the time because they are natural predators and conserve energy for hunting. They also need sleep for physical and mental restoration.

Cats sleep a lot because they need to conserve energy for hunting. They are also more active at dawn and dusk so they have plenty of time to sleep during the day for overnight hunting.

Cats may sleep more as they get older, as they may have less energy and may need more rest. Cats may also sleep more if they are feeling stressed or anxious. Additionally, cats may sleep more if they are bored or not getting enough stimulation. It is important to provide your cat with plenty of playtime and stimulation to help keep them active and alert.

Cats have developed the ability to sleep for extended periods of time throughout the day. To save energy for hunting, chasing, and killing their next meal, wild cats must sleep. Although our house cats may not need to hunt, the instinct to sleep and prepare for the hunt carries on.
