How do cats perceive sounds, and are they able to understand human speech?

Cats have an acute sense of hearing and can perceive higher frequency sounds than humans can. Cats are able to recognize some human words and tones of voice, and may be able to understand basic commands. However, cats are not able to comprehend complex human speech in the same way that humans do.
