The evolutionary purpose of a cat's retractable claws is to help them hunt and defend themselves. Cats use their claws to grab and hold onto prey, climb trees and other surfaces, and to defend themselves from predators. Retractable claws also help cats to remain stealthy, as they can retract their claws when they are not in use.
