Cats purr by using their larynx and diaphragm muscles to create a low-pitched sound. The frequency of this sound is usually between 25 and 150 Hertz. Cats purr when they are content or happy, but they may also purr when they are in pain or feeling stressed. Purring is thought to be a way for cats to self-soothe and express their feelings.
