Cats were introduced to North America by European settlers in the 17th century. Cats were brought over as pets, to help control rodent populations, and to hunt small game. They quickly spread throughout the continent, and are now found in every corner of North America.
Geoffrey Chaucer mentioned a cat door in The Canterbury Tales in the 1380s. From Europe, cats boarded ships to the Americas, reportedly tagging along with Christopher Columbus, with the settlers at Jamestown, and aboard the Mayflower.
