Domestic cats share 95.6 percent of their genome with the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica). This species is the ancestor of all domestic cats, and is found in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South Asia. Domestic cats are believed to have been domesticated around 8,000 years ago.

The biggest and perhaps most fearsome of the world's big cats, the tiger, shares 95.6 percent of its DNA with humans' cute and furry companions, domestic cats. That's one of the findings from the newly sequenced genomes of tigers, snow leopards and lions.
