Cats sometimes knead with their paws as a way of expressing contentment and pleasure. Kneading is thought to be a remnant of kittenhood, as kittens knead their mother's teats in order to stimulate milk production. Cats may also knead as a way of marking their territory, as the scent glands in their paws release pheromones when they knead.
