Cat allergies are caused by an allergic reaction to proteins found in a cat's saliva, urine, and dander (dead skin cells). When a cat licks itself, the saliva dries and becomes airborne, and the proteins can be inhaled. The proteins can also be found in the cat's urine and on its fur.
