Mother cats typically take care of their kittens until they are 8-10 weeks old. During this time, the mother cat will feed and groom her kittens, help them to learn survival skills, and protect them from predators. After 8-10 weeks, the mother cat will usually leave her kittens to fend for themselves.

Kittens should stay with their mothers for 12 to 13 weeks of age for them to be properly developed physically and behaviorally. The kitten needs to be weaned before being placed in a new home because much of its nutrients comes from the mother cat's milk.
