Cats' eyes shine in the dark due to a layer of tissue in the back of their eyes called the tapetum lucidum. This layer reflects light, allowing cats to see in low-light conditions. The tapetum lucidum also gives cats' eyes a distinctive shine when they are exposed to bright light, such as a flashlight or camera flash.
