Cats sleep a lot because they are naturally most active at dawn and dusk. Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the twilight hours. Cats also sleep a lot because they are predators and need to conserve energy for hunting. Cats also sleep to stay safe from predators, as they are often vulnerable when they are awake.

Cats have developed the ability to sleep for extended periods of time throughout the day. To save energy for hunting, chasing, and killing their next meal, wild cats must sleep. Although our house cats may not need to hunt, the instinct to sleep and prepare for the hunt carries on.
